query...survey says

if you have a redbox movie out and have to return it on a Sunday is it breaking the Sabbath?

Or do you pay an extra $ to keep it until Monday?

I've always struggled with the whole video store late fee I would never actually go INTO the store, but then again what's the difference Finally decided to eat the late fees.

So with the "box" does someone have to come to work and empty the box??? Goodness, I don't know. I think it's a personal thing.

I think dropboxes inside stores are out, because someone from church may see you IN THE STORE, outside drop boxes are half way breaking the sabbath because you know an employed empties that thing all the time and red boxes no matter the location are NOT SABBATH BREAKERS, because no human has to service them, they are serviced by the red box fairy and not on Sundays, so you're good.

You've asked a good question that requires some thought.I agree with SevenVillageIdiarts. But I also want to add another question... What about subscriptions to the news paper. They are delivered on Sundays. So, is subscribing to a newspaper breaking the sabbath?

I had this same question run through my brain tonight.

we didn't return it, cuz we were too embarrased to walk into the store where the box was...how would someone know we were using a box and not a human? I don't know of any outside the store boxes around here although I have seen them in Utah (wonder why ;) )

We try really hard to honor the Sabbath and do well except when we are traveling, then that's a whole nuther bucket of worms!

I have used them both red box and BB drop but feel bad each time and honestly feel better about the extra dollar than returning it on Sun. I have been there on Sat when the red box fairy came:)
Then when it comes to the news paper -- I start thinking what about the phone and internet and electricity and I wonder why I have trouble falling asleep:)

The paper thing made me laugh since my son is delivering papers until he goes on his mission next month. Believe me, they deliver it early enough in the morning that is can hardly be considered the Sabbath...

I wouldn't have a problem dropping the movie off but then again, I have been in the state liquor store and BOUGHT vodka... on Christmas Eve, no less. So do you really want to take advice from me? I think not. --hangs head in abject shame
